Agra Fort History
Agra Fort was commissioned by Emperor Akbar in 1565 and substantially completed by around 1573. It was built on pre-existing fortifications (the remains of a site known as Badalgarh) and designed not only as a stronghold but as an imperial city within walls. Over time, subsequent emperors—especially Jahangir and Shah Jahan—added or modified various palaces, mosques and pleasure pavilions. Agra Fort served as the principal residence of the Mughal rulers until 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. It also witnessed political rivalries, battles of succession, and changing hands in later centuries, including the Marathas and the British. One poignant historical fact: Shah Jahan, in his later years, was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in a tower within the fort (Musamman Burj), from where he could gaze at the Taj Mahal until his death.
